For each of the lightning protection levels, a minimum current level to be protected against has been determined (selected). Table 5 details these current levels, together with probability percentages that lightning may be greater than these levels. For example, Lightning Protection Level I positions terminals such that 99% of all lightning flashes are intercepted (all those of 3 kA or greater). There is only a 1% probability that lightning may be smaller than the 3 kA minimum, and may not be close enough to an air-terminal to be intercepted. It should be noted that flashes of less than 3 kA are rare, and typically would not be expected to cause damage to the structure. Protection greater than Lightning Protection Level I (99%) would require significantly more material, is not covered by the standard and generally is not required for commercial construction.
Minimum current levels (related to interception efficiency) for lightning protection levels 1 to 4
|Protection Levels||LEVEL 1||LEVEL 2||LEVEL 3||LEVEL 4|
|Minimum current (kA)||3||5||10||16|
Probability current is greater
than minimum (%)
|Rolling sphere radius (m)||20||30||45||60|
The lower lightning protection levels (LPL 2 , 3 & 4) each increase the air terminal spacing, reducing their ability to capture smaller lightning flashes, thus reducing overall the percentage of lightning events they can protect against.
Additional protection against direct lightning strike for the highest 20% of the structure height for buildings greater than 60 m or any point above 120 m, using ESE Air Terminal or any other means must be implemented at each façade wall according to a valid standard. Furthermore a minimum of 4 Down conductors, interconnected by a ring conductor when applicable, shall be used, distributed along the perimeter and if possible at each angle of the building.
NOTE: in general the risk due to the lateral flashes is low because only a few percent of all flashes to tall structures will be to the side and moreover their parameters are a lot lower than those of flashes to the top of structures.
